Among all the Rolexes I have, whether the so-called Rolexes or the Tudors which are manufactured by Rolex as well, I must say that the Submariner is my favorite of all time!

I really never felt any regret since I bought it a couple of years ago. Although it was a used one (yet I made sure it was made the very same year I bought it) yet it was in great condition. The guy I bought it from must have been in real despair for money to give up such a masterpiece that soon.

Something that really makes watches an interesting domain to me (maybe a hobby) is how they constantly 'build' over old versions to come up with new ones! For example, this Submariner was said to be inspired by an older version of Rolexes called 'Explorer'. I can easily see how the 'Submariner' could be a natural evolution of the 'Explorer'!

I spent sometime trying to decipher the 'date version' code! At the end I figured out that some Rolex versions have the date of release written on (like 16610) while others don't. The expression they use for both cases are respectively 'Sub Date' and 'No Sub Date', needless to say that 'Sub' is for submission of course!

Here's a list of the differences between the dated and the non-dated ones:

- The frog eye on the crystal: only present in the dated.

- The movements: the dated ones have Rolex 3135 movement while the non-dated have a 3130 (this one has a power reserve of around 50 hours).

- Bracelet: somehow different between the two.

One of the terms that you may hear in case you are purchasing a Submariner that was released before the year 2007 is that your model is a 'non-COSC' or "non-Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres". For the non-French and the non-Rolexians I say that this is some sort of certificate which is given to a watch after it passes several tests for endurance and accuracy. Unfortunately, not all Submariners chronometers went through theses tests to make sure they are accurate in time (no more or less second fluctuations).

But anyway, the Submariners are known for their high quality and accuracy whether they are certified or not. Originally designed for divers to withstand the high water pressure, the watch comes in a rather solid stainless steel case and has a timer which can time up to 60 minutes. The bracelet also is stainless steel and made of heavy oyster. I loved the multi-size screws and the tight lock, maybe that's the only thing that changed remarkable in the Submariner versions through the years.

It's worth mentioning that the numbers and marks are a piece of art (I could really see why many fake watches try to imitate them) and the hands have the usual 'Mercedes' style bonded by a Sapphire crystal.

In my own opinion, I see the Submariner as a delight to have. Whether it was released before or after the millennium, you'll find it perfect for your wrist in most of the occasions.

I agree it is too expensive, but when you think about the quality, durability and long-term hidden investment you could see it as a good deal indeed.

Rolexes has became part of their owners' legacies, many grandparents choose their OWN Rolexes as a perfect wedding gifts for their grandsons. Besides, a new trend of Rolex watches collectors in booming, making it financially worthy to buy a 'special edition' of Rolexes like those released in the jubilees.

One more thing if you are a goods-comparing lover. If any thing to be put in comparison with the Submariner then let it be the Sea Dweller. It's considered as a cousin to the Submariner but as any older version, the Sea Dweller is a bit larger in size which won't be as much comfortable as the Submariner.
